Un pari sur l’avenir immortalisé avec audace en couverture par Mario Testino, celui qui aura photographié depuis ses débuts une jeunesse dorée qui n’a cessé de confirmer son influence au fil du temps. Presque 20 ans se sont écoulés depuis la couverture de mars 1999, le premier duo Kate Moss/Mario Testino pour Vogue Paris. Flashforward ce mois-ci, avec la petite sœur de Kate, Lottie Moss, qui affiche à tout juste 18 ans toute la détermination de son aînée aux côtés d’une autre star montante du moment, Lucky Blue Smith. Des talents de demain aux complices de toujours – Jodie Foster qui se livre avant Cannes au jeu de l’interview exclusive ou Hedi Slimanequi photographie la mode électrique du printemps-été 2016 sous le soleil de la Californie – il ne reste plus qu’à forger son propre destin. Et si la clé se trouvait dans ce numéro, en s’inscrivant au tout premier concours de mannequin organisé par Vogue Paris en partenariat avec Dior Beauté et l’agence IMG Models pour tenter de devenir le Vogue Model 2017 ?

Almost 20 years have gone by since Kate Moss' first Vogue Paris cover for Mario Testino in 1999, fast forward to 2016 and the Moss on the cover is little sister Lottie, who at 18 is already showing just as much determination as Kate, posing alongside Lucky Blue Smith, another young model whose profile is currently exploding. From the talent of tomorrow to familiar faces and old friends, Jodie Foster gives an exclusive interview to Vogue ahead of the Cannes Film Festival and Hedi Slimane picks up his camera to shoot the electric fashions of Spring/Summer 2016 under the California sun as he prepares to take on a new challenge. Cette photo du mannequin Iselin Steiro par David Sims a été prise en 2010 à l’occasion des 90 ans de Vogue Paris. Dans ce numéro anniversaire qui célébrait avec éclat la mode, ses figures de légende, les couturiers, leurs muses, David et moi sommes tombés d’accord instantanément sur l’inspiration majeure de ces quarante dernières années. C’est à l’influence extraordinaire de David Bowie que nous avions voulu rendre hommage. Un artiste comme tombé d’une autre planète, une carrière filée brillamment entre muses et résurrections, sous les masques ingénieux et troublants de Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom, Aladdin Sane ou le Thin White Duke. Bowie, le prophète pop, a tout osé, l’androgynie, l’ambiguïté sexuelle, le glam, les paillettes, animé par sa passion pour le théâtre, le cabaret ou le mime. Il est sans conteste la star qui aura, au prisme de ses identités successives, imposé sans avoir l’air d’y toucher le style le plus marquant de la sphère rock. Pas une saison de défilés ne passe sans qu’une citation à cet objet de culte planétaire ne hante les podiums. David Bowie nous a quittés au moment même où nous bouclions ce numéro. Il lui est dédié.

This photo of model Iselin Steiro by David Sims was taken in 2010 on the occasion of 90 years of Vogue Paris. In this anniversary issue celebrating with a bang fashion, its legendary figures, fashion designers and their muses, David and I instantly agreed on the major inspiration of the past forty years. It is the extraordinary influence of David Bowie to which we wanted to pay homage. An artist that seemed to fall from another planet, a career brilliantly spun between muses and resurrections, under the ingenious and disturbing masks of Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom, Aladdin Sane and the Thin White Duke. Bowie, the pop prophet, dared all, androgyny, sexual ambiguity, glam, glitter, animated by his passion for the theater, cabaret, and mime. He is undoubtedly the star who will, through the prism of his successive identities, impose without seeming to touch the most striking style of the rock sphere. Not a fashion season passes without a citation to this object of planetary worship haunting the catwalks. David Bowie left us just as we completed this issue. It is dedicated to him.

Un tendre portrait, immortalisé sous le soleil de Malibu, faisant revivre le souvenir des photos au naturel qui ont construit la légende de Cindy Crawford, au moment où la jeune Kaia fait ses premiers pas dans les campagnes du moment. Ce premier shoot, elles l’ont pensé ensemble, mutuellement bercées par les conseils de l’une et la fraîcheur de l’autre, avant de décider que ce sera le seul et l’unique, pour laisser Kaia trouver son propre chemin vers les feux des podiums. Une même complicité, qui sert de fil rouge à ce numéro d’avril sublimant la beauté en héritage – des sœurs Ruth & May, invitées d’honneur de la série Bell à tomber, au charme de Dakota Johnson en passant par la filmographie accomplie de Chiara Mastroianni. A moins de vouloir approcher ces dynasties d’un peu plus près, en feuilletant à l’envi les albums de famille de légende, que l’on se plaît à fantasmer à la ville comme à l’écran. "The family resemblance is striking. There’s the same brown eyes that gaze out from underneath the same full brows, the smile could charm the stars out of the sky, the cascade of hair would have Barbie green with envy and same enviable figure from the same genetic miracle. Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia Gerber joins her on our cover this month and she’s a carbon copy of her mother at the same age, the original supermodel in the 1990s. For the first time, the pair pose together for Vogue, in the safe hands of Mario Testino," writes Emmanuelle Alt, Vogue Paris editor-in-chief, in her April editorial. And as Kaia Gerber takes her first steps in the industry with a campaign for Alexander Wang, this tender family portrait shot under the Malibu sun takes us back to the early beach shots that sent Cindy’s own career skywards. The connection on-set was palpable, with Cindy giving her daughter advice and Kaia lighting up the shoot with her fresh-faced beauty, but both decided that this would be the only time they would shoot together to allow Kaia to find her own feet in the industry. Moue ingénue, regard comme un défi, corps de lolita électrisé par un micro-short en jean, telle était la Vanessa Paradis au crépuscule des années 90 : une apparition — déflagration dans le paysage pop français. Cette photo signée Bettina Rheims est ma seule et unique collaboration en tant que styliste avec Vanessa.

Plus de vingt ans ont passé, j’ai toujours suivi d’un œil curieux et admiratif la carrière sur scène et au cinéma de Vanessa, tout comme ses choix d’une vie discrète et repliée, entre Paris et Hollywood, élégant bras d’honneur à l’insatiable voracité des paparazzi et de la presse people. Surexposée depuis ses 14 ans et le succès phénoménal de Joe le taxi, sa popularité élégamment façonnée grâce à Serge Gainsbourg, Patrice Leconte, Jean-Paul Goude pour Chanel ou encore Benjamin Biolay, elle a su converger tout son mystère. Un défi, à notre époque, qu’elle relève avec grâce. Rien d’étonnant donc à ce que Vanessa se voit offrir la rédaction en chef de ce Vogue de Noël. C’est une occasion rêvée pour elle de se dévoiler en toute confiance et, pour moi, de la retrouver toutes ces années après sur un plateau photo. Avec le même plaisir.

Ingénue pout, gaze like a challenge, body of Lolita electrified by denim micro-shorts, such was the Vanessa Paradis at the dusk of the 90s: an apparition — deflagration in the French pop landscape. This photo signed Bettina Rheims is my one and only collaboration as stylist to Vanessa.

More than twenty years have passed, I have always followed with a curious and admiring eye the career on stage and screen of Vanessa, like her choice of a discreet life and folded, between Paris and Hollywood, elegant bras d’honneur to the insatiable voracity of the paparazzi and the tabloids. Overexposed since she was 14 years old and the phenomenal success of “Joe le taxi,” her popularity elegantly shaped thanks to Serge Gainsbourg, Patrice Leconte, Jean-Paul Goude for Chanel or even Benjamin Biolay, she was able to converge all of her mystery. A challenge, in our time, which she meets with grace. It is therefore not surprising that Vanessa was offered editor in chief of Vogue this Christmas. This is a great opportunity for her to disclose in confidence and, for me, to find her after all these years on a photo board. With the same pleasure.
